PREFACE

Collectors will find described in the pages that follow a very interesting collection of coins, so varied that every one may be interested and find specimens he may wish to add to his cab- inet. TV m. IT AVeeks, Esq., has been a collector for many years, attended the auction sales in person, and was also a liberal pur- chaser from the dealers. The collection of the late Augustus Humbert, while not extensive, naturally contains many of the pioneer gold coins struck in California, etc., of some of which he was the assayer and issuer. It is curious that he had also foreign gold and silver coins, but the greatest interest centers in the superb, unequalled coins of California, the Mormons, etc. We believe it to be the first time that the Moffat $16 bar and the Kellogg & Co. $50 have ever been under public competition, and they should command great attention. The other pioneer gold coins in his collection contain examples in a superb state of preservation, surpassing those previously offered.

The other collections contain many valuable coins, viz., for- eign crowns a fine line rare cents and 1796 and 1841 4 cents, etc.

Every coin and medal is guaranteed genuine, and this guar- tee holds good indefinitely.

Catalogues will be supplied after the sale with the sums marked opposite each lot for which each coin sold for at the sale. Price, 75c. in advance.

Collectors will please bear in mind that the coins are sold so much each coin, no matter how many are in a lot. That no lot is divided or sold differently than as catalogued. The

only exception is that Large and Minor proof sets are sold per set (so specified in the catalogue).

At onr sales the past year we have had from 120 to 145 bid- ders at each sale, and to enter the vast number of bids made requires time, and we request collectors to send in their bids as early as possible before date of sale.

All reputable dealers make a charge of 10 per cent, of the sum purchased for attending the sale and executing the bids entrusted to their care; and the bidder is well repaid by service rendered.

We solicit the attention of collectors to this important sale.

Sincerely,
